18.07.2012 | Symbiotics and Gonet & Cie collaborate on emerging sustainable fund

Symbiotics teams up with the private bank Gonet & Cie for the launch of its emerging sustainable fund

Symbiotics innovates in the field of sustainable investments by launching a multi-strategy fund of fund. This product offers to its investor base an access to the diverse activities and areas of expertise covered by the company, namely about 50 high growth emerging and frontier markets, with an exposure not only to microfinance and low income financial infrastructure more broadly (savings, insurance, leasing, mortgages, mobile banking, remittances), but also to SME finance, with a particular accent put on job creation and the development of access to goods and services of first necessity (access to food, homes and energy) whose demand largely exceed the current offer in these markets.

The private bank Gonet & Cie was seduced by this approach and decided to let a portion of its client base benefit from it. Serge Robin, partner of the bank in charge of Asset Management, comments: "It was important for us that such a concept, which materializes our conviction in terms of sustainable development, proved its solidity in terms of risk and return, which seems to be the case in light of the results and performance over the past decade. Additionally, the decorrelation which it induces compared to traditional asset classes in case of stress on the capital markets legitimates the product in our investment philosophy. We thus think that such an investment strategy will create value for our clients, by balancing and diversifying their portfolios in the current difficult environment. We look forward to seeing this strategy unfold and to collaborate with Symbiotics." The reference index of the fund is the SMX MIV Debt index which since its launch in 2003 has generated on average 3.98% net return per annum in USD, with a volatility of 0.61%.

This sector of investment is relatively recent, in the sense that it cumulates the benefits of high economic growth markets, offering many value creation and capital gain opportunities, and the discipline of a sustainable and socially responsible approach, which seeks to take into account the interest of the various stakeholders involved in its value chain in order to generate stable long term development in underserved economies. It consequently offers a double added-value for the wealth management industry. It is nevertheless restricted to professional qualified investors, not being traded on regulated and liquid markets. With today about USD 25 billion of foreign direct investments and a growth of about 30% per annum over the past decade, this sector should gradually open itself to a larger universe of investors and asset managers.

For Roland Dominicé, CEO of Symbiotics, « We are happy to be able to bring our emerging market and sustainable investment expertise to the private bank Gonet & Cie and are convinced of the well-founded value of this investment proposal for their clientele. Today's investors can only benefit from innovative expertise and strategies which allow them to access high growth markets and reduce the challenge with they are facing in the current global market environment."
